Ulrich Kiesow

Biography

Ulrich Kiesow (born June 3, 1949; dead January 30, 1997) is the spiritual father of Aventuria. He began his professional career as an art teacher, editor and translator, among others of science fiction stories and American role-playing games. In 1983 he co-founded Fantasy Productions GbR with Werner Fuchs and Hans Joachim Alpers. In the same year, the three of them at Schmidt Spiele got the contract to develop a new role-playing game: The Dark Eye (Das Schwarze Auge).
Kiesow was the 'DSA Grand Master' or 'Responsible Editor', head of the DSA editorial team. He wrote the first set of rules, many adventures, articles in the Aventurian Herold magazine, of which he was editor-in-chief for many years, and novels on the world of Aventuria. While doing so, he allowed himself to inspired by American authors such as WC Fields and John Steinbeck and by 19th century Russian novelists. Some of his adventures and satirical columns in the magazine WonderWorlds were published under the pseudonym Andreas Blumenkamp. Ulrich Kiesow answered the fans' questions on the regular telephone and appointed the regional champions to support him. He also founded the letter game and appointed the regional chancellor.
Kiesow's favorite Aventurian regions, peoples and characters included Bornland, the Amazons, Nahema ai Tamerlein, Thesia von Ilmenstein and the stray Uribert von Kieselburg. He dedicated himself particularly to the common people of Aventuria, but did not shy away from drastic effects such as the destruction of Ysilias or Grangor . Mood and narration took precedence over compliance with the rules.
In his private life he was in a relationship with Ina Kramer and Britta Herz.
Ulrich Kiesow's last appearance in the DSA public was at the All-Aventurian Convention in 1996 (Katlenburg), when he read from his novel "When the Wheel breaks", which was published after his surprising death under the title "The Broken Wheel".
